We cannot research veteran's service records for details such as medals earned, units or organizations they served with, the period of their service, where they served, etc. Such information must be obtained from the veteran's personnel file held at the National Personnel Records Center in St. Louis. The NPRC website contains detailed information about how to obtain such records.
We can search unit history files at the National Archives in Washington DC for mention of a veteran of either World War I, World War II or the Korean War. We must have the unit they served with and the time period of service and cannot conduct a search without this information. Please note that this can be time consuming.
We cannot research any service after 1953.
A search of unit histories for mention of a veteran is more likely to be successful for:
- officers than enlisted men
- World War II and the Korean War than World War I
In all cases, the extent of records available can vary greatly between units. Some contain many documents, others have few, and in some cases no records have been saved, at all.
